New Federal Rule for Mobile Deposits

August 3rd, 2018

Although Wayne Westland Federal Credit Union’s mobile app doesn’t include mobile deposits yet (we’re working on it, we promise!), a new rule by the Federal Reserve Board may still affect our members. Called Regulation CC, it’s changing how financial institutions are processing mobile deposits.

If you’re unfamiliar with the term, mobile deposits let you use a credit union or bank’s mobile app to take a photo of a check’s front and back and remotely deposit it into your account. The new rule, in effect as of July 1, now calls for checks to include “For Mobile Deposit Only” on the back where you endorse them. When you order new checks from us, you’ll see this phrase printed on the back of your checks with a checkbox (see photo).

The reason for this change? The Fed says they’ve seen people make mobile check deposits and then turn around and cash the same check – essentially getting paid twice for one check. Regulation CC has been put into place to protect both you, the member, as well as the financial institution processing the check.
