October is filled with haunted houses, scary movies, and spooky decorations. But as Financial Counselors, we see some real-life financial horror stories that can be much scarier than any ghost or goblin. The good news? Most of these situations are preventable with a little planning, education, and awareness.
Here are some of the most common financial mistakes we see and how you can avoid them.
Horror Story #1: “I Signed the Contract Without Reading It”
It happens more often than you might think. Someone is excited about a new vehicle, personal loan, subscription service, or financing offer and signs the paperwork without fully understanding the terms.
Months later, they discover:
- A much higher interest rate than expected
- Hidden fees
- A longer repayment term
- Penalties for early payoff or missed payments
- Requirements they didn’t realize they agreed to
The Lesson: Whether you’re opening an account, financing a vehicle, taking out a loan, or signing up for a service, always take time to review the documents before signing. Understanding the terms helps you make informed financial decisions and ensures there are no surprises later. Never hesitate to ask questions. A reputable financial institution wants you to understand what you’re signing. Taking a few extra minutes today can save you significant stress and money later.
Horror Story #2: “I Didn’t Realize I Was Responsible Too”
Another common mistake we see is when someone agrees to cosign a loan, become a joint owner on an account, or add their name to a financial obligation without fully understanding what that means.
Many people do this to help a friend, family member, or significant other, only to discover later that they share responsibility for the debt or account activity. If payments are missed, the loan defaults, or the account is overdrawn, it can affect everyone whose name is attached.
The lesson: Before agreeing to cosign, become a joint borrower, or be added to someone’s account, make sure you understand your responsibilities and potential risks. Ask questions, read all documents carefully, and consider how the decision could affect your credit and finances.
Just because you trust someone doesn’t mean you should skip understanding what you’re signing.
Horror Story #3: Minimum Payments Become Maximum Problems
A member receives a credit card bill and decides to make only the minimum payment each month. While this keeps the account current, it may barely reduce the balance.
Over time:
- Interest continues to accumulate
- Debt takes years to repay
- Subsequent purchases only increase the balance
- Monthly obligations become overwhelming
The lesson: Whenever possible, pay more than the minimum payment. Even a small additional amount can significantly reduce the interest you pay and shorten the time it takes to become debt free.
Horror Story #4: Credit Problems Hidden in the Closet
Many people avoid checking their credit reports because they fear what they might find. Unfortunately, ignoring credit issues does not make them disappear.
We’ve seen situations involving:
- Collection accounts members didn’t know existed
- Identity theft
- Reporting errors
- Late payments hurting credit scores
The lesson: Review your credit reports regularly and watch your credit score. Identifying problems early gives you more time to correct them and improve your financial standing.
WWFCU members can conveniently monitor their credit scores directly within Online and Mobile Banking. Our My Credit tool allows you to view your credit score, monitor changes over time, receive alerts, and gain insights into factors that may impact your score.
Checking your credit regularly is one of the easiest ways to stay informed and take control of your financial future.
Horror Story #5: The Holiday Spending Hangover
Every year, people enter the holiday season with good intentions only to start the new year carrying credit card debt they didn’t plan for.
Common mistakes include:
- Shopping without a budget
- Relying heavily on credit cards
- Purchasing gifts on impulse
- Waiting until the last minute to shop
The lesson: Create a holiday spending plan now. Set realistic limits, track your purchases, and remember that meaningful gifts do not have to be expensive. Your January self will thank you!
If you need extra funds for holiday expenses, consider WWFCU’s annual Christmas Loan Special. Unlike revolving credit card debt, a holiday loan offers a fixed payment, fixed term, and a defined borrowing amount, making it easier to budget and stay on track.
For example, if you borrow $1,000 through a Christmas Loan at a lower fixed rate, you could save a significant amount in interest compared to charging that same $1,000 to a credit card with a much higher interest rate. Fixed-rate borrowing provides predictability, a defined payoff date, and a more structured way to manage holiday expenses.
Stay tuned for an announcement about this year’s special holiday rate!
Horror Story #6: Falling for Scams and Fraud
Scammers become more sophisticated every year. They often create a sense of urgency to convince people to share account information or send money quickly.
Common scams include:
- Fake text messages claiming your account is locked
- Fraudulent package delivery notifications
- Romance scams
- Impersonation scams posing as financial institutions or government agencies
The lesson: Never provide personal information unless you have independently verified who you are communicating with. If something feels suspicious, stop and contact your financial institution directly.
